Position Title: Senior Staff Accountant
Location: New York, NY
The Senior Staff Accountant will be a critical member of the Accounting Services department to ensure internal controls are routinely performed or implemented to support the integrity of the financial reporting process and overall accounting operations. This individual must be detail oriented with strong organizational skills in the performance of their duties. The Senior Staff Accountant will be required to access and perform duties using the mainframe system, peripheral systems and should have background using accounting applications. This position will have direct responsibilities for the external audit, financial reporting and month-end closing processes. He/she will interface with various staff and departments within the University. The position will supervise Staff Accountants and be part of a team of similar and related staff who will assist in the implementation of major process improvements within the Accounting department.
• Performance and supervision of general ledger account reconciliations
o Supervision of daily cash reconciliation of Banner to the General Ledger (GL)
o Responsible for specific Balance Sheet account reconciliations as assigned in account control listing. Specific reconciliations include, but are not limited to, DNR Pledges Receivable, Other Receivables, Accounts Payable GL to subsidiary ledger
• Routine monthly accounting duties
o Supervising daily Banner cash deposits reconcile to the General Ledger
o Ensuring Pledges are entered into the system weekly and reconciled
• Performance and supervision of month-end close duties
o Any Debt related journal entries in coordination with Treasury
o Accounts Receivable (Student, Pledges) journal entries
• Performance and supervision of various other duties including one time special projects
o Researching and summarizing any new FASB or GAAP requirements
o Responsible for maintenance of Accounting Policy and Procedure documentation
• Assist in annual audit preparation and performance of routine task during the audit
o Lead role in preparation of the YU consolidated audit financial statements, PBC’s, and footnotes
o Lead role in preparation of 403(b) audit, financial statements, PBC’s and footnotes
o Assist in preparation of After Tax Plan audit, financial statements, PBC’s and footnotes
o Assist in coordination of the , RIETS, High Schools audit, financial statements and footnotes
• Assist in various projects
o Assist on remediation of various Management Letter Comments
o Assist on remediation of various Internal Audit findings
o Assist with the implementation of Banner ERP system
• Perform supervisory duties
o Possible supervision of one Junior Accountant and one Staff Accountant
Experience and Educational Background:
• Bachelor’s required
• CPA preferred
• Higher education experience in a similar role.
• Experience with accounting system applications
Skills and Competencies:
• Customer service mindset
• Proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office products is required
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision
• Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Good supervisory and mentoring skills
