The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University (VUBME: engineering.vanderbilt.edu/bme) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position. We seek an outstanding candidate who will add to existing strengths in translational biomedical research and actively engage with the Vanderbilt Initiative in Surgery and Engineering (ViSE: www.vanderbilt.edu/vise), which is an interdisciplinary, trans-institutional center whose mission is the creation, development, implementation, clinical evaluation and translation of methods, devices, algorithms, and systems designed to facilitate interventional processes and their outcome. We seek a culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to develop a strong, externally funded research program, along with an equal commitment to outstanding teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
VUBME exists at both the scientific and geographic boundary of Vanderbilt’s engineering school and its renowned medical center, making it an ideal location for engineering research at the interface of technology and interventional medicine. ViSE’s key research areas include surgical guidance, minimally invasive surgery, interventional instrumentation, interventional imaging and therapeutic delivery devices, medical robotics, soft tissue modeling, and image analysis. The core faculty of ViSE span three engineering departments and nearly a dozen surgical and interventional specialties. Other areas of research strength in VUBME include Biomedical Photonics, Medical Imaging, Nanomedicine and Biomaterials, and Cellular Sensing and Control. Researchers working at the intersection of ViSE and one of VUBME’s core areas are particularly encouraged to apply.
Both the undergraduate and graduate VUBME programs are consistently ranked in the top 20 in the country, and the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering is ranked 3rd amongst PhD-granting schools with fewer than 100 faculty. The university has a student body of over 12,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, including 25.3% minority students and 1,169 international students from 84 countries. Vanderbilt is located in the beautiful and historic city of Nashville, which offers a thriving community of creative and high-tech individuals and businesses. The city offers a full range of cultural amenities, two major professional sports franchises, an abundance of parks and outdoor recreation, a temperate climate, and a low cost of living.
Applications should be submitted electronically at academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/5937 and must include: a cover letter with names and contact information of at least three references, a CV, a statement of research interests highlighting synergies with existing ViSE activities, and a statement of teaching philosophy. Evaluation of applications will begin 01 October 2015. Vanderbilt University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer committed to increasing the cultural and intellectual diversity of its faculty. Women and members of under-represented minority groups are especially encouraged to apply.
