Under the direction of the dean and the department chair, this position manages all aspects of advising functions for prospective, new, continuing, and transfer students in all phases of the teacher education programs. Duties include managing an advising caseload, actively recruiting students to the education programs, explaining policies and procedures, maintaining records, working with faculty and staff, accurately entering data for national accreditation, representing the department on various projects, committees, and meetings as assigned, providing service to the university and the community, and upholding professional and ethical standards.
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree plus two years of experience related to Summary of Duties totaling six years.
Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with a Master’s degree in an education related discipline.
Knowledge of student advising techniques that will assist students to develop effective academic plans and career goals.
Knowledge of teacher education programs.
Knowledge of School of Education content, curriculum, and graduation requirements.
Knowledge of effective student advisement and recruitment methods and techniques.
Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software.
Skills in record management as applied to management of student records, report preparation, and related activities.
Skills in the use of university software (BANNER).
Excellent communication skills and ability to relate well to students, faculty, and administration.
Ability to manage independent work responsibilities involving the organization of multiple complex tasks.
Ability to prioritize/follow-through to completion.
Ability to solve problems effectively and creatively.
Ability to anticipate department and student needs.
Ability to communicate effectively.
