To provide advising services to 250+ San Fernando Valley Campus in Burbank (SFVC) students currently enrolled at SFVC and its multiple educational sites; process admission paperwork,advise what courses to transfer, explain universities requirements, visit different classroom locations to meet with students, and support students until they graduate.

Specific Duties

The Academic Advisor will provide undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the San Fernando Valley Campus in Burbank with academic advising information, guidance and recommendations using the full knowledge of the University of La Verne’s academic policies and procedures regarding general education requirements, major requirements, and transfer credit requirements. The Advisor will maintain unofficial academic files of all students as well as prospective students enrolled, or considering enrolling at the San Fernando Valley Campus, while ensuring official files and records are accurately received and recorded by the University’s Registrar’s office.

Review and update students’ unofficial files and academic progress to determine academic status and degree completion objectives. Ensure students are adhering to Program requirements, fulfilling prerequisites, and maintaining satisfactory academic and enrollment status. Provide all students with an updated education plan showing progress updates and future course recommendation for degree completion.

Routinely visit classes at the SFVC or one of its educational sites for academic updates and announcements, as well as encourage students to schedule personal advising appointments to ensure retention and educational satisfaction. Contact students who did not enroll to determine individual situation and assist with reenrollment and degree completion.

Collaboratively work with SFVC, Associate Directors of Admissions in increasing student enrollment and satisfaction. Provide prospective students with information about the University, available degree programs and unofficial evaluations of coursework that would transfer to La Verne.

Review undergraduate and graduate applications for admission eligibility, accuracy, completion and provide a recommendation for admission to the Campus Director.

Represent La Verne at local Community Colleges, college fairs, and local corporations during student recruitment efforts, and La Verne sponsored information sessions when assigned by Director.

Take an active role in anticipating long- term course scheduling requirements and assist Director in planning.

Perform those duties assigned by the supervisor.

Although the position reports directly to the Campus Director it is expected that the incumbent regularly work with personnel at the La Verne Campus and the office of Regional and Online Campuses (ROC) to become an expert on University Policy and Procedures and provide guidance and training to others.

The ability to develop professional, effective and efficient relationships with all University of La Verne constituents is critical to success in this position.

Minimum Qualifications

Academic Advisor II – Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of experience in Higher Education,Human Services, or related professional experiences providing support services for adults; or Master’s degree and 1 year of experience in Higher Education, Human Services, or related professional experiences providing support services for adults.
Academic Advisor III – Master’s degree and 3 years Higher Education, Human Service, or related professional experiences providing support services for adults AND 1 year of successful
Higher Education Advising experience.

Special Instructions to Applicants

This position is available at the San Fernando Valley Campus in Burbank. The job requires traveling to multiple educational sites for regular advising visits after 5 pm. Regular office hours are: M-Thursday from 9 AM to 6:30 PM and every other Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM. Some Saturdays may be required.
